General Rules for Editions

Books with Edition Statements

Place edition information after the title. End the title with a space and enclose the edition statement in parentheses. Take away the superscript for the th, nd, or rd ending for a numeral.

Express numbers representing editions in Arabic ordinals, as first becomes 1st, IV becomes 4th.

Abbreviate the word edition and other descriptive words:

  • Revised edition becomes Rev. ed.
  • Eighth Edition becomes 8th ed.
  • Third edition becomes 3rd ed.

End with a period.

Example:

Schott, J. & Priest, J. (2002). Leading antenatal classes: A practical guide (2nd ed.). Books for Midwives.

Republished Books

Older works may go out of print and then get republished. For these you will want to give both the original publishing year as well as the republished year.

Example:

Nightingale, F. (1992). Notes on nursing: What it is and what it is not. Lippincott. (Original work published 1946)
