Researching Hot Topics in Dental Hygiene

This guide is designed to help you develop a research question relevant to the practice of dental hygiene, locate professional sources, evaluate the sources, and use APA style in a written report.

Assignment Components

Choosing a Topic

Choose a topic that interests you, expands your current knowledge, and provides you with new insights. 

Develop a Research Question

Your question can be from a patient's perspective or from a clinical perspective. 

Conduct Preliminary Research

Conduct preliminary research using Taft College library resources, including books, magazine articles, and scholarly journal articles. Minimum requirements include:

  •  Two published studies
    • One should be a randomized controlled trial or observational study
    • One may be a systematic review with or without meta-analysis
  • Two credible sources
    • One peer-reviewed article
    • One magazine article, textbook, website, podcast, webinar, etc.

**These are minimum requirements. Sources should be current--published within 5 years--and credible, relevant, and accurate.

Use APA 7th ed. style for your research paper.

    • 1" margins
    • Times New Roman font, size 12
    • Double spaced
    • In-text citations
