Library Guides

For additional help using library resources, explore the library's Library Research Skills guides.

Research Project

The research paper topic will be inspired by a topic you find interesting from The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The broad topics must be narrowed to a question to explore and answer related to the themes and setting of the creative/narrative nonfiction work of Rebecca Skloot.

The following broad topics should be NARROWED and focused to create your research question that will guide your research.

  • Historical Context Topics:
    • The Tuskegee Experiment and its Legacy
    • The Development of Informed Consent
  • Science and Society Topics:
    • HeLa Cells and the Commercialization of Science
    • Bioethics and Issues of Privacy

  • Write a 6 - 8 page MLA formatted research paper.
  • Use a minimum of five Taft College library database sources from the past decade. You may use older sources for historical information.
  • You must use a variety of source types with at least three of the following categories: books, magazines, newspapers, scholarly articles, and government publications. Identify your source types in the annotated bibliography.
  • After you have found and referred to at least five TC Library sources, you may use valid and reliable sources from other libraries or Google Scholar.
  • Expect to use many more sources to earn an A. The best papers include between 7-15 sources.
  • Only the first five sources from the TC Library need to be included in your Annotated Bibliography.
  • Use the rubrics associated with assignments for this paper for source requirements.

Format the paper according to MLA Handbook, 9th ed., including Times New Roman or Ariel font, size 12, Double-spaced, and 1" margins all around. See the MLA 9th ed. tab on this guide for details on formatting your in-text citations and Works Cited page. Refer to the Annotated Bibliography tab for examples of a short and long annotation.

Check out the Types of Sources guide for more details about primary and secondary sources.
